The 5th Battalion of the 22nd Artillery was originally a self-propelled M107 175mm gun battalion serving with the 41st Artillery Group of I Field Force, Vietnam. It was converted in early 1969 to the dual 8-inch self-propelled M110 howitzer and 175mm self-propelled gun configuration. Having arrived at Nha Trang, it immediately moved to An Khe. The battalion was transferred to 52nd Artillery Group Control in March 1969 while at that location. In 1969 it was relocated to Ban Me Thuot and in January 1970 was attached directly to I Field Force Vietnam Artillery and moved to Phan Rang. It remained there until departing Vietnam.
