222nd Aviation Battalion
In early 1966 the 222nd Aviation Battalion was activated in Vietnam as a fixed wing Aviation Battalion flying Mohawks and Birddogs. The 222nd CAB was assigned to the 12th Combat Aviation Group at Bear Cat. The 222nd under went a name change when they transitioned to an all Helicopter Combat Aviation Battalion. The 222nd supported the 1st Infantry Division and 5th Special Forces and also several Thai's Assault Helicopter Companies operating in III Corps. The 222nd CAB was formed by the 117th , 195th , 222nd Pathfinders Detachment, "B" Company, 229th Assault Helicopter Company and the 273rd Heavy Helicopter Company (Sky Crane) also had a Sky Crane Company operating throughout II, III and IV Corps. The 222nd Combat Aviation was awarded the Meritorious Unit Commendation for their action 1 January to 31 December 1967.
