Edmund C. Abbott graduated from Kansas State Agricultural College in 1893. Also an attorney, he was admitted to the Bar September 4, 1894 at Garden City, Kansas, and practiced several years in Trinidad, Colorado and later in Taos County where he had moved in 1897.
He served as a Representative in the House of the 34th Legislative Assembly, and was appointed district attorney for the First Judicial District by Governor Otero in 1901, serving five terms, under three governors. In 1908 he was appointed Assistant United States Attorney for New Mexico. He was then elected as first Judge of the First Judicial
District under to the State Government on November 7, 1911.
He served as Colonel of the First Infantry, National Guard of New Mexico since 1909. In 1916 the National Guard was mobilized to Columbus, New Mexico with Col. Abbott in command and served under General Pershing. He remained in the Army and served overseas in World War I and was subsequently stationed at Governors Island, New York.
His tombstone is located in the Arlington National Cemetery, Section 3, Grave 1722-A, just downhill from the loop on McKinley Drive, southeast corner of the Cemetery.
