In July 2010, the 5th Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division was inactivated and reflagged as the 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division. The Brigade's Special Troops Battalion was also inactivated and reflagged, but the rest of its subordinate units were reassigned to the reactivated 2nd Brigade Combat Team. 5th Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division's mission was to prepare for deployment to Operation Iraqi Freedom to conduct full spectrum operations to defeat terrorists, insurgents, or paramilitary forces. The 5th Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division was activated on 4 May 2007 at Fort Lewis, Washington. At the time 5th Stryker Brigade Combat Team was the Army's newest Stryker Brigade Combat Team and the seventh formed within the US Army up to that date.
