This Unit Insignia was worn on my Class A uniform
due to my assignment / service to the 1st Medical Battalion
1st Infantry Division Support Command in
Di An South Vietnam from August 1968 - Feb 1969.
Description: A Silver color metal and enamel device
1 1/8 inches in height overall consisting of a shield blazoned
(Coat of Arms): Sanguine (reddish brown color),
a bear passant Proper (a walking California Bear);
on a chief Argent (silver metal) a cross of Malta
of the field (eight-pointed Maltese Cross of the
Order of St John of Jerusalem).
Attached below the shield is a Silver scroll inscribed
"IN OMNIA PROMPTUS"
in maroon letters.
Symbolism: The shield is sanguine, with the chief in silver,
the colors of its predecessor, an organization of the
Medical Department.
The bear denotes that the unit was organized at
Camp Fremont, California.
The cross of Malta was a device used by the first
exclusively military medical organization,
the Knights Hospitallers of Saint John of Jerusalem,
which was formed in 1118.
Background: The distinctive unit insignia
was originally approved for the 8th Medical Regiment
on 2 March 1934. It was re-designated for the
8th Medical Battalion on 28 November 1939.
The insignia was re-designated for the 1st Medical Battalion
on 6 August 1940.
It was amended to add the motto on 16 June 1967.
The insignia was re-designated for the 201st Support Battalion
with the description and symbolism amended on 5 June 1987.
Best Moment 8 Mar 1968 Awarded Combat Medical Badge (1st Award).
Worst Moment Dec 1968, while assigned to 1st Medical Battalion, Di An, when I learned about the death (KIA) of CPT Samuel G. Umstot, Jr, while on a patrol with an infantry squad, on 12 Sep 1968.
Other Memories After being assigned to the 44th Medical Brigade (HHC 44th MD Bde) in VN, I was informed that unit did not need my services and was reassigned to Co D, 1st Medical Batttalion, 1st Infantry Division from 03-01-1968 to 03-17-1968 and immediately assigned to HHC/1st Battalion/28th Infantry Regiment/1st Infantry Division, Quan Lo, RVN.
