Robert "Bob" Eugene Harris, of Stedman, passed away on Wednesday, May 27, 2009, in his residence. Mr. Harris was born in Washington, D.C., on Oct. 2, 1935, to the late Milton and Louise Kebler Harris. He was preceded in death by his first wife of 33 years, Ruth Harris. He leaves behind his family and many friends to cherish his loving memory. Bob began his military career when he enlisted in the Army in 1952 and served with the 187th Regimental Combat Team in Japan; was stationed in France for three years; served with the 5th Special Forces Group in Vietnam. He served four tours of duty. Among his medals and citations received include two Purple Hearts, Bronze Star with V-Device, Combat Infantryman's Badge, Parachute Badge, National Defense Service Medal, Air Medal and Vietnam Service Medal. He retired with the 10th Special Forces Group in 1972. After his military retirement, he worked with Avanti Knitting Mills for five years, and worked for the U.S. Postal Service in Spring Lake as a window clerk before retiring in 1994. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and golf until his health declined. He is survived by his wife, Carol W. Harris of the home; two sons, George Smith and wife Brenda of Autryville, and Gordon Smith of Fayetteville; two daughters, Carolyn Swann of Fayetteville and Evelyn Fulford and husband Randel of Enterprise, Ala.; seven brothers, Larry Harris, Milton Harris, George Harris, Martin Harris, Charles Harris, Richard Harris and Raymond Meador; one sister, Anita Richardson; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends at Butler Funeral Home in Stedman from 6 to 8 tonight, May 29, 2009. A funeral service will be held at Stedman Baptist Church on Saturday, May 30, 2009, at 11 a.m. with Dr. Phil Spears officiating. Burial will follow in Cumberland Memorial Gardens on Raeford Road in Fayetteville.
