Sergeant Major Ronald Berry passed away on 8 May 1981 in Mesquite Texas. Ronald was born 1 September 1939 in St. Joseph Missouri. He entered the Army in late February 1957 to begin a military career that included service with the Special Forces Training Group, the 5th, 6th, 7th, and 10th Special Forces Groups; Army Special Forces Detachment (Europe); the 82nd Airborne Division, 11th Armored Cavalry, and 3rd Infantry Division. Ronald's military education included OCS, Flight School, Armor Officer's Advanced Course, and the Sergeant's Major Academy. His awards and decorations include the DFC, Bronze Star Medal, Air Medal w/V Device (33 awards), ARCOM w/V Device and four Oak Leaf clusters, Good Conduct Medal (7th award), National Defense Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal w/60 Device, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry w/Palm, Presidential Unit Citation, Valorous Unit Citation, Vietnam Civic Action Unit Citation, Combat Infantry Badge, Expert Infantry Badge, Aviator Wings, Master Parachutist Badge, French Parachute Wings, and SCUBA Diver Qualification Badge.
Ronald served as the President of Chapter XXXI of the Special Forces Association at the time of his death and was instrumental in the formation of that chapter. He was buried with full military honors and is survived by his wife Heidrun, daughter Christine, and his mother.
Ronald's beret has been retired. He served his country with great courage and conviction. He now belongs to God.
