He served three tours in Vietnam: In 1965 as a Green Beret advisor to a Vietnamese airborne ranger battalion ; In 1967-68 as an advisor to an Vietnamese infantry battalion; Then in 1971 as Executive Officer  of an infantry battalion in the 101st Airmobile Division.
