The 1st Military Police Brigade (Provisional) provided the Fort Lewis Community with law enforcement support, combat support, and prisoner confinement operations. The law enforcement mission included every service you would expect to find in a civilian police force, from patrol officers to investigators to McGruff the crime dog.
The 1st Military Police Brigade was a provisional brigade-level command that had been first organized as a the Fort Lewis Law Enforcement Command on 24 February 1976 to provide a command and control structure for a variety of military police units at Fort Lewis, Washington. The Fort Lewis Law Enforcement Command was redesignated the Fort Lewis Military Police Command on 9 September 1994.
It was redesignated the 1st Military Police Brigade (Provisional) on 16 September 1996 to reflect both its combat support and law enforcement roles. After its activation, the command successfully maintained that very important balance between providing garrison law enforcement to the Fort Lewis community and training for the vital wartime functions assigned to the subordinate units under its charge.
