Other Memories He was assigned to the "War Department", working directly under Army Chief of Staff George C. Marshall from 1938 until February 1941 when he was promoted to Brigadier General, bypassing the rank of colonel. He was the first from his class to be promoted to general officer. His West Point Class of 1915 had 59 cadets who became general officers. They were called "The class the stars fell on". He and Dwight D. Eisenhower achieved the rank of General of the Army.
