Robert Eliason was a farmer that answered the Nations call, joining the Army and preparing to deploy to Europe for the Normandy Invasion. Just days into the Normandy Invasion PFC Eliason was struck by shrapnel from artillery rounds. PFC Eliason spent over a year in the hospital healing and rehabing.
With all his limbs still attached and a lot of new German engineered metal left in his legs Bob went home to Erie, PA where he lived out his days as a husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and iron worker. Bob refused disability for his wounds recieved at Normandy and died a poor lonely man from heart failure at 77.
Grandpa only spoke of his experience in the Army to me one time ever. Afterwards I had talked to my father about the story to which he replied that this was the first time he had ever heard of an Army story being told to anyone.
