Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 313th Army Security Agency Battalion was reorganized and redesignated 16 October 1979 as Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 313th Military Intelligence Battalion, and assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division with the 358th Army Security Agency Company and the 82nd Military Intelligence Company being concurrently reorganized and redesignated as Companies A and B, 313th Military Intelligence Battalion. B Company also received personnel from the inactivated 337th Reconnaissance Company, while some personnel of the 358th Army Security Company joined personnel of the redesignated 371st Radio Research Company becoming Company C, 313th Military Intelligence Battalion.
In 1986 A, B, and C companies were designated as direct support companies for each of the 82nd Airborne Division's 3 infantry brigades. The Battalion continued to evolve in the late 1980s and early 1990s, with the activation of D Company as the general support company and the transfer of the Long Range Surveillance detachment from the Division's Cavalry Squadron to the 313th Military Intelligence Battalion in 1996. The lineage included 23 campaign and battle streamers from World War II, the Dominican Republic, Vietnam, Grenada, Panama, and the Persian Gulf . Its exemplary service and support to warfighters earned the unit 7 Meritorious Unit Commendations, one Army Superior Unit Award, and 5 foreign unit awards.
Elements of the 313th Military Intelligence Battalion accompanied the 82nd Airborne Division on its deployments to Iraq between 2003 and 2005 as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
In 2006 as part of the transformation of the entire 82nd Airborne Division to the US Army's new modular force structure, the 313th Military Intelligence Battalion was inactivated.
