Capt. Edmund C. Hentig, commanding Company D of the Sixth Cavarly, was born in Michigan in 1845. He received an appointment as Second Lieutenant in the regular Army June 12, 1867, and accepted his commission June 24, when he was attached to the Sixth Cavalry and ordered to frontier duty. He was made First Lieutenant of his company Dec. 23, 1868, and served in this capacity for nearly eight years, during which time he saw a great deal of active service on the Plains and gained the reputation of being a brave and tried soldier. On Nov. 15, 1876, he was commissioned Captain of Company D. He stood No. 85 in the lineal rank of Captains in the Army.
