Side by Side Togetherness

from  1951, 2nd Battalion, 200th Infantry, 31st Infantry Division (BCT) (Fort Jackson, SC), A  album
At night, if you had to make a piss call, it was just like going to an out house. You had to get up, go outside, walk to the latrine, pee and then go back to your hootch. During rain storms, some soldiers were seen hosing it down outside while standing in the doorway of the tent. Either that or peeing in an empty butt can. in the morning, lines formed here as well. Usually with guys with crossed legs who said things like, "C'mon, Cmon". In those days, there was no such thing as, "Don't ask, don't tell". It was more like, "Keep your eyes staring at the wall, no peeking, or else you'll get a discharge for the convenience of the government". Photo © Gary Schwertley
