We were married on 30 June, 1956 and had an extended honeymoon in Hawaii. I was due to return to the States at the end of September. When I had talked with personnel, I requested an Airborne assignment. They told me that I would go to the 101st at Camp Campbell and I was looking forward to it.
On 28 September, 1956 we were transferred to Ft Knox, Kentucky. Personnel said that the Armor School had a pressing need for NCOs. Was I disappointed? You bet. That was the end of the blue piping on my cap.
We had an Aloha send off, boarded an Air Force Super Constellation and returned to CONUS.
Our household goods consisted of a steamer trunk that Betty brought to Hawaii, a crate with my uniforms and our first family possession, a small black and white TV. We had bought it from Sears in Honolulu so that we could watch the Ed Sullivan show the night Elvis Presley made his debut on television.
After a short leave with family in Worcester, Massachusetts, we drove to Ft Knox in a 1949 Mercury that I had bought in 1953 while stationed at Ft Benning. it had been up on blocks for a long time and used for a while by my brother-in-law.
