This picture was made as I was leaving for second relief on guard duty at a remote company motor pool. During that shift I was the only guard there. It was about twilight when, as I rounded a corner from the garage building, I encountered a soldier trying to slip through the barbed wire. I lowered my M-1 Garand rifle and pulled the bolt back and released it as if to be arming the rifel and immediately yelled, "Commander of Relief, Post Number 3." The soldier froze in the fence. The MP's arrived and took him away. I later learned that the soldier was given a court martial.
