On this day August 3 1990, President George Herbert Walker Bush orders the organization of Operation Desert Shield in response to Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait on August 2. The order prepared American troops to become part of an international coalition in the war against Iraq that would be launched as Operation Desert Storm in January 1991. To support Operation Desert Shield, Bush authorized a dramatic increase in U.S. troops and resources in the Persian Gulf.
Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein and hard-line Iraqi nationalists had always believed Kuwait should be part of Iraq, but nationalist propaganda aside, acquiring control of Kuwait’s oil fields was Hussein’s primary interest. In addition, control of Kuwait represented a strategic military objective should Iraq be forced into a war with its western-friendly Arab neighbors. Hussein calculated incorrectly that the United States and the United Nations, who were closely tracking Iraq’s military buildup along Kuwait’s borders, would not try to stop him. However, when Iraqi ground forces entered Kuwait on August 2, 1990, President Bush immediately proclaimed that the invasion “would not stand” and vowed to help Saudi Arabia and Kuwait in their efforts to force the Iraqis from Kuwaiti land.
On November 29, 1990, the United Nations Security Council authorized the use of “all means necessary” to remove Hussein’s forces from Kuwait, giving Iraq the deadline of midnight on January 16, 1991, to leave or risk forcible removal. After negotiations between U.S. Secretary of State James Baker and Iraq’s foreign minister, Tariq Aziz, failed, Congress authorized President Bush to use American troops in the coming conflict.

Got sick on a Friday and developed a high fever. Had I went to the medical clinic I would have been hospitalized and recycled back to next class. Had a couple physician assistants in my platoon who provided me meds and took care of my needs enough for me to recover by Monday to avoid recycle. Thanks to those PAs.

Black Hats (Warrant Officers), Blue platoon. Best and most professional in the school. Red platoon Black Hats were hard knucle heads. Gold platoon Black Hats were the worst. They were sadistic jerks during our time frame.
Other Memories
Remember getting rousted out of WWII era barracks one night and made to get in ditch to do dying cockrouch (on our backs with arms and legs bicycling) while black hats from Gold platoon hosed us down. Thought to myself, why am I putting up with this as an E-7 in the Army? Answer, Rite of passage.
Remember eating square meals and all that entailed. If you were there, you knew the daily hassle three times a day. No coffee, No desert, No soda rites the whole time there.

Can't remember any names. I recall three guys in my squad were on their way to WOCS school for helicopter flight school after basic training. They were from CT or VT area.
Best Moment
Had a few great moments. 1.) Selected as Squad leader by SFC Moore. 2.) PT score making me eligible to wear a "super jock" pin, that allowed a few perks, like going to the front of chow line and no KP. 3.) Maxing the Soldier's Stakes Course - 1000 of possible 1000 points. 4.) graduating with my dad flying over from Germany and my Uncle Wilson driving up from NC to watch.
Worst Moment
Had a few bad moments too. 1.) Failed the first PT test which was 5 events. Maxed each event except for the horizonal bars because they rolled, slipped off. 2.) a week or two before graduation I had my squad leader stripes taken away by SFC Moore because he found my footl locker unlocked. Lock was on it through hasp but apparently didn't secure and dropped open. 3.) got extra KP duty. I was waiting an hour for phone booth to call Germany (to my future wife) and as I literally got connected the drill sgt told me to get off phone. Drill was from another platoon. Call was about 30 seconds tops. Nice guy-not! 4.) one of the fire guards (dumb ass) was caught smoking by a drill sgt who had the whole company fall out in their skivies doing pushups in the snow/freezing weather on the hard ball (asphalt)in front of building for about 30 minutes. The next day a huge number of troops went on sick call. Luckily I wasn't one of them.

Drills - SFC Moore and SSG Dutton. Interesting note -almost 20 years later, I ran into SSG Dutton in 1996 at St. Mere Eglise drop zone at Fort Bragg on his last parachute jump, retiring as a CSM. He wasn't wearing his Drill Sgt patch so I had to comfirm it was him. I think it punctuated his career to have a former trainee recognize him from his previous 20 years. He was a great Drill. Mucho respect!
