For Gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. 1LT Toschik distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 11 Aug 70 while serving as a platoon leader of a Ranger platoon with Co. E (Ranger), 75th Infantry, 3d Brigade, 9th Inf. Div. in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date, as friendly elements maneuvered on the ground, LT Toschik was flying overhead in the Command & Control helicopter when it suddenly began to receive intense enemy machinegun and rocket-propelled grenade fire. With total disregard for his personal safety, LT Toschik took one of the aircraft's weapons and moved to the left door to assist the door gunner in returning the enemy's fire. Although wounded twice, he continued to place highly accurate, suppressive fire upon the enemy positions. LT Toschik was then wounded a third time as the helicopter received a direct hit and crashed. Before succumbing to his wounds, LT Toschik managed to pull the pilot, who was wounded and pinned to his seat, free from the burning craft. 1LT Toschik's gallantry in action was in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit and the Untied States Army.
