Worst Moment
Maj William H. Leach from Bn S-2 and 6 or 7 soldiers were killed at night by friendly fire while conducting a reconn across the Rhine River. A BAR gunner in defensive position on the riverbank was not notified that a patrol was crossing in front of his position in a raft and opened fire upon hearing noises in the water. I was scheduled to lead the patrol and the Major took my position for the experience.

Upon Graduation, the Sergeant went down the line issuing unit assignments. Almost everybody was assigned to the 82nd Airborne except I was n exception and assigned to the 10st Airborne.

Finding my Unit had shipped out for Europe after returning from medical leave.
Other Memories
After my Appendectomy and being sent home for 30 day medical recovery leave, I came back to Camp Gruber, OK via train from NYC to Chicago to Tulsa. From Tulsa, I took a truck to Gruber to find that the entire 643rd TD Bn had shipped out for mobilization for Europe.
I was assigned to 15th Tank Destroyer Group. They assigned me to HQ/15 TDGP as an Inspector (MOS 2521)and later as a Ration Officer (MOS 2156-9).
I had wanted to get to the war, so I volunteered for transfer to the Parachute Infantry.
Worst Moment
I was deployed to Camp Swift, TX to conduct a packing and moving problem. I became developed appendicitis and was returned to the 98th Evac Hospital back in Camp Gruber, OK. for surgery on 21 March 1944.
After 30 day in the hospital, I was sent home on medical leave for 30 more days. Upon return to Camp Gruber, I found that my Battalion had been shipped out fro Europe and I had been left behind. I was assigned to the 15th Tank Destroyer Group for holding.
