The Silver Star may be awarded to any person who, while serving in any capacity with the Armed Forces of the United States, is cited for gallantry in action, against an enemy of the United States while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an opposing foreign force or, while serving with friendly foreign forces engaged in armed conflict against an opposing armed force in which the United States is not a belligerent party.The required gallantry, while of a lesser degree than that required for the award of a Distinguished Service Cross, Navy Cross, or Air Force Cross, must nevertheless have been performed with marked distinction. Leading the assault... Presented posthumously in memory of the late Lieutenant Calvin O. Allen, former minister of the Church of Christ in Fellows, whose widow resides at 110 Woodrow Avenue, Bakersfield. Leading the assault platoon of his company against enemy positions on a hill, Allen deployed his men, when they came under fire, so effectively they were able to capture or kill 30 of the Germans.
Later, when the platoon came upon a house the enemy was using as a strong point, Allen had his men cover his advance as he boldly charged the house with grenades. He was able to reach the house and throw grenades into it before he was killed by machine-gun and mortar fire. By the sacrifice of his life, Allen destroyed the enemy strong-point, securing the flank of his regiment and making further advance possible. His action was an inspiration to all who knew him and reflects the highest traditions of the armed forces. Allen served in the Three Hundred Fiftieth Infantry Regiment of the Eighty-eighth '?Blue Devil'? Division of the Fifth Army. Lieutenant Allen was Killed in Action at Imola, Italy.
