After the erection of the Berlin Wall, units were frequently deployed to this formation, until the military strength was at an all-time high (277,342 soldiers in June 1962). For most of the Cold War period, the forces assigned to the Seventh Army consisted of roughly two army corps of soldiers, V Corps and VII Corps. Frequent exercises were held to prepare the Seventh Army units for possible combat against Soviet forces. These included the enormous Exercise REFORGER or REturn of FORces to GERmany, which practised the reinforcing of American units in Germany with those from the United States itself, a vital task had war broken out between NATO and the Warsaw Pact.

Each day that one or more sorties are flown in accordance with these criteria shall count as one day toward the 30 or 60 day requirement; Personnel who serve in operations and exercises conducted in the area of eligibility are considered for the award as long as the basic time criteria are met. Due to the extensive time period for KDSM eligibility, the non-consecutive service period for eligibility remains cumulative throughout the entire period. In 1954, the division was converted to a combat division once again, though it did not regain its "Mountain" status. The 10th was deployed to Germany, replacing the 1st Infantry Division at Würzburg, serving as part of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization defensive force.The division served in Germany for four years, until it was rotated out.

After WWII, the 15th Cavalry Regiment was re-designated the 15th Constabulary Regiment. The Regiment initially occupied the defeated Germany. As the cold war began the new duties of the 15th shifted to patrolling the border between West Germany and East Germany, as well as the border with Czechoslovakia until 1952.

The 7th was occupation duty in Korea from 1946 to 1948, the men of the 17th, 31st, and 32d Infantry Regiments rotated on the outpost positions along the 38th Parallel. In the fall of 1948, the Korean elections took place, and true to its commitments, the U. S. removed its occupation forces from the country. When the Hourglass Division sailed for Japan in December of 1948, its commander was the last Military Governor of Korea, Major General William Frishe Dean, who would return to Korea later. In Japan the Division's zone of occupation included nearly half of the total land area of its former enemy. Elements of the Division were garrisoned on Honshu and on Hokkaido, the northernmost island.
