I moonlighted at the AMCROSS (American Red Cross) Telecommunications Center in the rear building on either the second or third floor. The telephone room is where the most of the messages were received from Red Cross chapters. A few of the larger chapters had their own TELEX comms to send teletypes to AMCROSS. In early 1974 we transcribed the incoming telephone calls on typewriters. When I/we left for Naples, Italy in 1977, we were using those dumb computer terminals with the green illuminated letters/numbers. Also, a Honeywell minicomputer was introduced in this time to create teletype message start of message preambles and end of message functions. The primary purpose of AMCROSS was sending information for emergency leave, health and welfare, financial distress, and more decisions to be made by commanders. When Vietnam fell in April 1975, we began receiving requests for sponsorship and sending the replies, either yea or nay. I myself sponsored Sister Mary Goretti, nee Ngoc Lan, who fled Vietnam with her niece. The hourly pay was pretty good and on weekends I could call anywhere in CONUS for free.

We processed telephone and teletype messages for the U.S. military that provided emergency leave notification, family support in financial need, my serviceman/woman does not write home, and many other notifications.

The US high command had been expecting an attack in 1972, but the size and ferocity of the assault caught the defenders off balance because the attackers struck on three fronts simultaneously with the bulk of the North Vietnamese army. This first attempt by the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (North Vietnam) to invade the south since the Tet Offensive of 1968 became characterized by conventional infantry/armor assaults backed by heavy artillery, with both sides fielding the latest in technological advances in weapons systems.
In the I Corps Tactical Zone, North Vietnamese forces overran South Vietnamese defensive positions in a month-long battle and captured Quảng Tri city before moving south in an attempt to seize Huế.
PAVN similarly eliminated frontier defense forces in the II Corps Tactical Zone and advanced to seize the provincial capital of Kon Tum, which would have opened the way to the sea, splitting South Vietnam in two.
Northeast of Saigon, in the III Corps Tactical Zone, PAV forces overran Loc Ninh and advanced to assault the capital of Bình Long Province at An Loc.
The campaign can be divided into three distinct phases: April was a month of PAVN advances; May became a period of equilibrium; in June and July the South Vietnamese forces counterattacked, culminating in the recapture of Quảng Tri City in September.
On all three fronts of the offensive, initial North Vietnamese successes were hampered by high casualties, inept tactics and the increasing application of U.S. and South Vietnamese air power. One result of the offensive was the launching of Operation Linebacker II, the first sustained bombing of North Vietnam by the U.S. since November 1968.
Although South Vietnamese forces withstood their greatest trial thus far in the conflict, the North Vietnamese accomplished two important goals: they had gained valuable territory within South Vietnam from which to launch future offensives, and they had obtained a better bargaining position at the peace negotiations being conducted in Paris.... The United States provided logistical, aerial, and artillery support to the operation, but its ground forces were prohibited by law from entering Laotian territory. The objective of the campaign was the disruption of a possible future offensive by the People's Army of Vietnam (PAVN), whose logistical system within Laos was known as the Ho Chi Minh Trail (the Truong Son Road to North Vietnam).
By launching such a spoiling attack against PAVN's long-established logistical system, the American and South Vietnamese high commands hoped to resolve several pressing issues. A quick victory in Laos would bolster the morale and confidence of the Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN), which was already high in the wake of the successful Cambodian Campaign of 1970. It would also serve as proof positive that South Vietnamese forces could defend their nation in the face of the continuing withdrawal of U.S. ground combat forces from the theater. The operation would be, therefore, a test of that policy and ARVN's capability to operate effectively by itself.
Because of the South Vietnamese need for security which precluded thorough planning, an inability by the political and military leaders of the U.S. and South Vietnam to face military realities, and poor execution, Operation Lam Son 719 collapsed when faced by the determined resistance of a skillful foe. I went to teletype school to learn the keyboard functions; prepare message formats; as well as basic radio and crypto machine equipment. I had six hours of instruction on the KL-7 off-line encryption and decryption system. See: http://jproc.ca/crypto/kl7.html - TSEC/KL-7 (ADONIS/POLLUX). We were told this system was no longer used by the U.S. That was technically true; however cmm NATO/OTAN countries did use it. I as shift supervisor used this system extensively during my assignment to Naples cmm Italy - 1/77 to 1/80. Since I already knew how to type having taking typing classes in high school some of my teletype training was superfluous. The instructor gave me a mop and bucket and had me cleaning the hallways.
