Description
To improve fire-support coordination at company level, the Army developed the concept of the fire support team in 1978. This involved consolidating artillery and mortar forward observers into teams organic to division artillery battalions but organized and assigned on the basis of the type and number of companies to be supported. Team members were trained in a new military occupational specialty, MOS 13F, Fire Support Specialist, to coordinate all fires including naval and close air. The concept also included personnel and equipment increases in the battalion and brigade fire support sections.
