PFC Manning Haney served with Company F, 2nd Battalion, 506th Parachute Regiment, 101st Airborne Division in the ETO. He had enlisted on 8 August 1942 in Butte, Montana.
He had parachuted into Normandy near the village of Ste. Marie du Mont (near Utah Beach) and fought in the battle around Carentan.
He was killed during the night of 8/9 October 1944 in Holland during Operation Market Garden south of Arnhem in an area known as "the Island" (Battle of Opheusden, Randwijk, Holland). He was killed at a machine gun position along with Pfc. Clarence L. Shrout by a German mortar round.
He was awarded, posthumously, the DSC for actions of 7 October 1944.
He was 19 years of age.
Initially buried in the Temporary Cemetery of Molenhoek, Holland, he was finally interred in Bell Cemetery, Iuka, Marion County, Illinois near where his parents rest.

Distinguished Service Cross Synopsis:
The President of the United States takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Manning G. Haney, Corporal, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company F, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, in action against enemy forces on 7 October 1944.
Corporal Haney's intrepid actions, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
