In November 1950, Bunchuk was assigned to Company L, 3rd Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division then occupying a defensive position southwest of Unsan, North Korea, near a bend in the Kuryong River known as the Camel's Head. On November 1, parts of two Chinese Communist Divisions struck the 1st Cavalry Division's lines, collapsing the perimeter and forcing a withdrawal. In the process, the 3rd Battalion was surrounded and effectively ceased to exist as a fighting unit.

Sergeant Bunchuk was a member of Company L, 3rd Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division. He was listed as Missing in Action while fighting the enemy in North Korea on November 2, 1950. Sgt. Frank Bunchuk, was just 19 years old when he was deployed overseas to battle in North Korea. Only months later, in November 1950,

   
Comments/Citation
Sergeant Frank Bunchuk was awarded the Purple Heart, the Combat Infantryman's Badge, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.

While in a MIA status, Frank Bunchuk was promoted to Sergeant. Burial will be in Arlington Cemetery, 09 Aug 2007.

Sgt. BUNCHUK attended Medina schools and was employed by the H. J. Heinz Co. here before entering service in April 1950. He was sent to Korea and served with an infantry unit in the 1st Cavalry Division.
