Sergeant First Class Cooper was a Light Weapons Infantry Leader with the 35th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division. He was seriously wounded by the enemy in South Korea on April 4, 1951 and died of those wounds the following day. Sergeant First Class Cooper was awarded the Purple Heart, the Combat Infantryman's Badge, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.

Ernest is buried in the Burton-Cooper Cemetery (also called the Weatherford Cemetery) on Jeff Whitfill's Farm. It is located on Highway 629 near Rockvale, KY.
