Marine Corps Service:
Marvin Woodsmall enlisted in the Marines on  7 September 1950. He completed Marine Boot Camp at Parris Island, South Carolina with the 4th Recruit Training Battalion.

By January 1951, he held the rank of PFC and was based with C Battery, 2nd Anti Aircraft Artillery Auto Weapons Battalion (AAA), FMF,  Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.  He continue to served at Camp Lejeune for his full tour of duty. By the summer of 1953, he held the rank of USMC Staff Sergeant at Camp Lejeune, serving with C Battery, 2nd AAA Auto Weapons Battalion, FMF, being discharged on 6 September 1950. (Held USMC MOS 0765)

Army Service:
On 18 June 1961, he enlisted in the U.S. Army.

He served in Vietnam from 25 December 1965 until he was killed in action on 21 November 1966.

SSgt. Woodsmall was interred in Laid to rest in Fairview Cemetery, Elnora, Indiana.
