Jim was in the rear seeking medical attention for his hearing he went out on what would be his last mission to help fill out the crew, which was undermanned. He was standing on the back deck of the tank when a RPG struck the cupalo killing him and fellow NCO School classmate Larry Knipple on "Black Friday " March 13th 1970
