MSG Charles Lester Robbins was killed on 15 February 1967. MSG Robbins was assigned to 85th Ordnance Detachment (Explosive Disposal), 6th Ordnance Battalion, 45th General Support Group, Army Support Command Qui Nhon, 1st Logistical Command, Pleiku, Pleiku Province (today called Gia Lai Province), Republic of Vietnam. MSG Robbins, SP5 Lynch, and two non-Explosive Ordnance Disposal volunteers (CPT Bruce and PFC Paige) were attempting to clear a minefield near Plieku, Republic of Vietnam when the accident occurred. The Explosive Ordnance Disposal team was supporting 6th Battalion, 14th Field Artillery Regiment in clearing three mine fields. A M16A1 antipersonnel mine detonated when MSG Robbins was either attempting to probe for it or safety it. Fragments from the explosion killed MSG Robbins. SP5 Lynch was severely injured and the two volunteers received minor injuries. MSG Robbins received a posthumous promotion and Purple Heart Medal.
