CW2 Peterson received his flight training in Flight class: 68-501. In Vietnam, he served with B Company, 1st Aviation Battalion, 1st Infantry Division. His tour began 2 May 1968.  He was killed in a mid-air collision with another helicopter (UH-1D #66-00802 flown by Capt. Arnold Sanford) during a night combat assault in Ben Suc area of Vietnam He was the pilot of a UH-1C (# 66-15203) helicopter. The three crewmen with him were also killed. He was based a Phu Loi, Binh Duong Province, Vietnam with B Company, 1st Aviation Battalion, 1st Infantry Division.

Lost crewmen:  UH-1C (# 66-15203), CW2 Stephen R. Peterson, (AC),  WO1 Allan D. Eyler, (P), SP5 Thomas J. Watts, (CE), SP4 Julian W. Berg, (G).
