SSG Michael Jerry Mummel, Vietnam Veteran, Native of Reidsville, NC.

Staff Sergeant Michael Jerry Mummel was a casualty of the Vietnam War. As a member of the Army, SSG Mummel served our country until July 19th, 1966 in the Boi Loi Woods, near Hua Nghia, South Vietnam. He was 20 years old and was not married. It was reported that Michael died from multiple fragmentation wounds from a mine. His body was recovered. Michael was born on January 9th, 1946 in Reidsville, North Carolina. SSG Mummel is on panel 09E, line 041 of the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington D.C. He served our country for 3 years.

I was in same company and in the same battle. He was a kind and gentle soul and is in heaven with many other comrades who were together in battle with us on that day. I cried when I saw your body on the back of that deuce-half, as we were laughing together that morning GOD I miss you and that smile of yours. Mike Moschkin, 2608 Little Rd, Valrico, Fl 33594.

Remembered by more than your comrades: I never knew you, but my father did (March 13, 1935 - Feb 16, 2003) and he remembered you. Let not your sacrifice and courage be forgotten. Janey Klein, 1418 Hayward Ave Deltona Fl 32738,

The Boi Loi Woods lay about 25 kilometers northwest of Cu Chi. Like the nearby Ho Bo Woods, the Boi Loi was a long-time sanctuary for VC (and increasingly NVA) forces. When the 25th Infantry Division arrived at Cu Chi in early 1966 a major objective was to reduce the value of these areas to the enemy - and that meant extensive search-and-destroy missions. On 19 July 1966, Company A, 1st Bn, 27th Infantry was conducting such a mission in the Boi Loi Woods when it was ambushed by a main force VC battalion. Twenty-four Americans died in the bitter fight which followed. SSG Michael J. Mummel, Reidsville, NC was one of those killed.

He was the son of Mr and Mrs George H Mummel, 532 Sands Circle, Reidsville, NC.

He served with Alpha Company, 1st Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment, "Wolfhounds", 25th Infantry Division, "Tropic Lightning", USARV.

He was awarded The Bronze Star Medal, The Combat Infantryman's Badge(CIB), The Purple Heart Medal for his combat related wounds, The Vietnam Service Medal, The Republic of Vietnam Campaign Service Medal, The National Defense Service Medal and The Good Conduct Medal.
