1LT Merrett was killed in action in the Hau Nghia Province of Vietnam in December 1968. A native of Chicago, James Merrett moved to Phoenix in 1951. Merrett graduated from Carl Hayden High School in 1963 and attended Arizona State University where he was a member of the Pershing Rifles and Theta Delta Chi. At the start of his senior year in September 1966, he joined the Army. 1LT Merrett was an Infantry Unit Commander with C Company of 2nd Battalion, 12th Infantry in the 25th Infantry Division and was awarded the Purple Heart.
