Sgt. Jeffry Kockritz was one of several killed in an explosion, apparently a friendly fire incident.

Excerpt from The Miami Herald Obituary: "Paratrooper Sgt. Jeffry Kockritz, 22, of Miami Shores. . . was killed by a mortar blast. A few days before, he wrote to his mother. . . telling of how he had shot down a young Viet Cong soldier in a doorway. 'Afterwards I went off alone,' Sgt. Kockritz wrote, 'and wanted to cry.' War in Vietnam: It is a terrible price we pay."
