CW2 Clayton James served with C Troop, 2nd Squadron, 17th Cavalry, 101st Airborne Division. His tour began on 7 September 1970.

He and his crew were killed when their OH-6 (##67-16543 ) was shot down.
Those lost:

CW2 Clayton W. James [AC]
SP4 Noel B. Witmer [CE]
SFC Ervin B. Cherry [OB] (died 20 days later of his injuries)

He was interred in Amelia Cemetery, Amelia Court House, Amelia County, Virginia.
