Lieutenant Colonel Ernest Richard Howell was a casualty of the Vietnam War. As a member of the Army, LTC Howell served our country until April 30th, 1971 in Pleiku, South Vietnam. He was 41 years old and was married. Ernest died when his helicopter crashed. His body was recovered. Ernest was born on July 11th, 1929 in Goldsboro, North Carolina. LTC Howell is on panel 03W, line 020 of the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington D.C.

He was a career Army officer who was serving his second tour in Vietnam. He was a graduate of North Carolina A&T University in 1952. He is the Son of Mr and Mrs Amaziah Howell of Goldsboro NC. He leaves behind his wife Temple and four children, Ernest Jr.,Michael, Duane & one daughter Temple Sharite Howell all of Goldsboro NC. He was commended by officials in the Canal Zone for his outstanding leadership in the Boy Scout movement

He served with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2nd Regimental Assistance Command, United States Army Vietnam Military Assistance Command Support Command, USARV.

He was awarded Legion of Merit, The Silver Star Medal for Bravery, The Bronze Star Medal, The Purple Heart Medal for his combat related wounds, The Korean Service Medal, The United Nations Service Medal(Korea), The Korean Defense Medal, The Vietnam Service Medal, The Republic of Vietnam Campaign Service Medal, The National Defense Service Medal, The Air Medal with Multiple Oak Leaf Clusters, The Good Conduct Medal, The Achievement Medal and The Commendation Medal.
