Last Known Activity
In late 1950, Cates was a member of Company I, 3rd Battalion, 31st Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division. He was reported missing in action on Dec. 3, 1950, following combat actions against enemy forces in the vicinity of the Chosin Reservoir, North Korea. He was presumed dead on December 31, 1953. His remains were identified and accounted for on May 31, 2019.
