TO MY BROTHER, JIMMY(James Bryan Elder, Jr.)
But a boy--too soon a man---too late to realize the gift that he gave all of us during his short but vibrant 19 years. He was my kid brother...mischievous, incorrigible, playful and "worshipped" for he was like an angel...the golden glow of his blonde "locks" surrounding a cherubic countenance..and that smile of innocence..oh yes, such mischief behind that smile! My brand new Christmas panda bear remembers! I remember! Oh, how I remember!
Rarely did it rain in Midland, Texas...but on one such occasion..it was a "frog strangling" rain...water to the top of the curbs..deep pools of mud and "mystery".... and one stuffed teddy bear in the arms of a eager small boy! And down, down, down to the bottom of the swirling stream the two did clammer! Oh, such fun...such an adventure! And Jimmy, none the worse for the adventure.... but my panda...he never to recover his "bearings"...and transformed into a "brown" bear for life! Jimmy was always "heading toward the unknown...leaning into the wind, pressing on into new and uncharted experiences and territories..a loner..a lover..the brother of my "heart"...
And to you Jimmy, my fallen "boy wonder", my beloved brother, I say... "I remember you since you are gone away, gone far away into the silent land, When you can no longer hold me or my panda by the hand, AND I half turn to go but I stay in the memory day by day, Recalling how you told me of your dreams - your plans for the future. And now, in My dreams, I hear you say, "Dear Sister, If you should forget me for a while and then remember me again and and then again, do not grieve for me for if this darkness and human corruption leave a small part of the thoughts-the dreams that once I had, better by far that you should forget for awhile and smile Than you should remember and be sad."
I love you, Jimmy...and you will never be forgotten..and you are only gone away, gone far away into the silent land. I pray that I shall see you again one day, when you again can hold me by the hand! Adieu. God Bless You and Our Great Land!
Your proud sister, Ann
