Prior to his service, Captain Dimmitt attended Oregon State University and Pacific University, Oregon.

During his first tour of Vietnam duty in 1965-6, he served as a psychological warfare officer in a Green Berets unit . Prior to his second tour, he was stationed at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, 1966-67

In his second tour in Vietnam, Captain Dimmit served as an intelligence officer and commander of a mortar company.

He was killed during helicopter operations. (No other details.)

He was interred in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Arlington County, Virginia, Plot: Section 6 Site 9101-0.

He left a wife and two daughters at his death, age 30.
