A former, Lynn soldier who was, wounded and awarded, the purple heart, in March, has been killed in action, in South Vietnam.

Sgt., Carter was serving, with Company A, 2nd, Bn., 35th, Infantry, at the La Drang, when he was killed in action, along, with fellow soldiers, Ssgt., Gregorio Garci, Sfc., Alvin Hopkins and Sp4, James Steward Jr..

According, to the Army telegram, Infantry, Sgt., Kenneth Robert Carter, 31, son, of Mr. and Mrs. Herbert E. Carter, 30, Dexter St., died, as result, of gunshot wounds, received, while on combat operations, against a hostile force.

The hero, a veteran, of the Korean War, lived, with his Japanese wife, Suzuko and two daughters, Sachi, 11 and Peony, 8, at Schofield, Barracks, Army post, in Hawaii.

Besides the Purple Heart, Sgt., Carter, an Army veteran, of 13, years, had also received, the Combat, Infantryman's Badge, Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Meritorious Unit Citation.

Born in Lynn, he lived here, until he enlisted, in the Army, in March 1953. He attended Harrington, Elementary, Cobbet, Junior High and English, High.

Sgt., Carter served, in Korea twice and had been stationed, in Japan, Fort Bragg, N.C., Fort Riley, Kansas and Fort Campbell, Ky.. He was also a member, of the Honor Guard, at Fort Dix, N.J., He last visited, with his parents, two years ago. He was assigned, to Schofield, Barracks and in January, he joined, the 35th, Infantry Division, in Vietnam.
