GO #487, 29 Dec 1944, HQ 36th Infantry Division. On 20 Sep 1944 in France, Klaff was acting squad leader and entered a dangerous open area prior to bringing his men in. He was machine gunned and ordered one of his men away to give the enemy position to the company. He died before he could be evacuated.
