Last Known Activity
1st SERGEANT BERESFORD OSCAR SEALE WAS BORN IN BARBADOS IN 1888 AND CAME TO THE U.S. IN 1906. BERESFORD FIRST ENTERED THE SERVICE IN JULY OF 1910 WHEN HE JOINED THE MARINE CORP. WHERE HE SERVED IN CUBA, PANAMA AND FOUGHT IN NICARAGUA IN THE BANANA WARS IN 1914. AFTER LEAVING THE MARINES IN JULY OF 1914 BERESFORD SOON ENLISTED IN THE U.S. ARMY IN SEPTEMBER OF THE SAME YEAR. HE FIRST SERVED WITH THE MACHINE GUN COMPANY OF THE 8TH INFANTRY REGIMENT AND WAS PROMOTED TO SERGEANT. IN JULY OF 1917 SEALE TRANSFERRED TO COMPANY A, 31ST INFANTRY REGIMENT WHERE HE EVENTUALLY SERVED IN SIBERIA DURING WWI AND THE RUSSIAN CIVIL WAR FIGHTING AGAINST THE BOLSHEVIKS. WHILE IN SIBERIA SEALE SERVED AS FIRST SERGEANT BUT LATER WAS MOVED DOWN TO SERGEANT DURING THE OCCUPATION PERIOD. IN SEPTEMBER 1919 SEALE WAS HONORABLY DISCHARGED BUT IMMEDIATELY REENLISTED IN ORDER TO SERVE IN THE PHILIPPINES WITH THE 31ST WHERE HE REMAINED THROUGH THE REST OF HIS CAREER. IN 1932 THE 31ST WAS SENT FOR A SHORT TIME TO SHANGHAI, CHINA FOR THEIR SERVICE IN CHINA THE REGIMENT RECEIVED THE YANGTZE SERVICE MEDAL.
1ST SERGEANT SEALE HAD MARRIED PAULA QUINONES IN 1935 AND WAS SERVING WITH COMPANY E IN THE PHILIPPINES WHEN THE JAPANESE ATTACKED AND THE REGIMENT WAS EVENTUALLY SURRENDERED AND 1SG SEALE TAKEN PRISONER AND WAS PRESENT DURING THE BATAAN DEATH MARCH .SURVIVING THE MARCH HE WAS HELD AS A PRISONER AND SUBSEQUENTLY DIED IN THE SINKING OF THE HELL SHIP ENOURA MARU.
