PFC John Bowers served with Company L, 3rd Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division.

He was taken Prisoner of War while fighting the enemy in South Korea on 14 February 1951 and was killed by a guard on 3 May1951 in POW Camp 5, Pyokdong, North Korea..

Though his remains were not recovered following the action in Korea, they were eventually accounted for 15 February 2015 through DNA. He was interred in Greenville Memorial Gardens, Anderson County, South Carolina.

He was awarded the Purple Heart, the Combat Infantryman's Badge, the Prisoner of War Medal, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
