He was a High School graduate of Mooseheart High School  Illinois, 17 June, 1939.

He enlisted on 24 March 1943 in Chicago, Ill as an Army Air Force Clerk Typist for the HHC Headquarters of the 302nd Air Transport Wing. His unit was was base in 1943 in 519th Grove Berkshire (Royal Air Force Station Grove), Great Britian, in 1944 after the invasion of Europe; in 1 Rue de Tillsit 8 Arrondisement, near the Arc of Triumph, Paris, France and later in Belgium in 1945.

In March 1945 a commendation letter from Dwight David Eisenhower, Supreme Commander, A.E.F. to Colonel Martin A. Bateman, Commander, 302nd Transport Wing, Army Air Corps, and to the men under his command; two messages on the version of D.D.E.'s letter: the first from Col. Bateman to his crews, and the second from Lt. Col. K.A. Reecher, Commander, 27th Air Transport Group, 302nd Transport Wing to the squadrons in his group, relaying Eisenhower's commendation of their repatriation flights.

His Parents were Francis Richard Byron and his Mother, Helen Cecilia Devers. Robert worked as a Clerk in civil life after separtion from military service. He married to the former Mrs Madeleine Germaine Schopin ( Newly Byron) in 1945 in Paris, France. He returned to Chicago  to raise a family in January, 1946. Madeleine Germaine Byron remarried later on after his death in 1964. To Edward Maguire of Oregon .
