Sgt. Despain enlisted on 7 September 1950.

He was seriously wounded on 1 September 1951; and returned to duty on 5 Novwembewr 1951. He was killed in action in North Korea on 26 November 1951.

He was interred in Sugar Creek Cemetery, Rushville, Missouri.
