MARGARET MARY (HOVATTER) BACKOFF WAS A CLERK LIVING IN PARSONS WEST VIRGINIA BEFORE SHE ENLISTED IN THE W.A.A.C. ON 6 AUGUST 1943. AFTER RECEIVING A 6 WEEK ADMINISTRATION COURSE SHE WAS ASSIGNED TO THE 591ST A.A.F. BASE UNIT AT STOCKTON FIELD, STOCKTON CALIFORNIA WHERE SHE SERVED UNTIL 14 NOVEMBER 1945 WHEN SHE WAS HONORABLY DISCHARGED. MARGARET WAS THE SISTER OF THE TUCKER COUNTY WEST VIRGINIA SHERIFF O.G. HOVATTER WHO WAS SHOT TO DEATH ALONG WITH A WEST VIRGINIA STATE TROOPER WHEN THEY ATTEMPTED TO ARREST A MAN FOR STEALING A COAL TRUCK ON 9 SEPTEMBER 1946.  ON 9 APRIL 2002 MARGARET  BACKOFF PASSED AWAY AND WAS LAID TO REST AT REST HAVEN MEMORIAL GARDENS. SHE WAS THE WIFE OF EMANUEL FRANK BACKOFF WHO PROCEEDED HER IN DEATH 1995.

NOTE: DISCREPANCY IN THE MIDDLE INITIAL; HER ENLISTMENT AND BIRTH RECORD STATE HER FIRST NAME AS MARY AND HER MIDDLE NAME AS MARGARET.
