Last Known Activity
Capt. Burns served with the 447th Bombardment Squadron, 321st Bombardment Group, 12th Army Air Force.

His bomber group was deployed to North Africa in early 1943.  He was involved in 41 combat missions to targets in Africa, Sicily, Sardinia, and Italy.

On his final mission his plane was badly damaged and crash landed near the Salerno, Italy beachhead. He and his bombardier were both wounded in this action.

He received the Purple Heart and Distinguished Flying Cross for his service. He spent the rest of the war in the Air Transport Command based in Dallas, Texas.
