PFC Brugge enlisted in the Army on 21 April 1941 from Buffalo, New York.


In the ETO invasion of Normandy, PFC Merrill Brugge served with A Company, 1st Battalion, 112th Infantry Regiment, 28th Division. Although the entire regiment would not be ashore till D+46, July 22, 1944, the first elements ashore went right into combat trying to breakout of the Normandy Beachhead.
