SSG Applegate was one of 96 Army Soldiers who were Killed In Action during the Persian Gulf War.  He was survived by his wife and two children.

Preliminary information stated that he was killed by the Iraqi Republican Guard.  It was later learned that his death was actually by friendly fire.  See the story of friendly fire incidents during the Persian Gulf war here:  http://nucnews.net/2000/du/91du/911105.htm
