Last Known Activity
This was how excited Roberto C. Baez was about joining the Army: He slept next to a checklist of things to do to prepare for boot camp. He had an "Army of One" bumper sticker above his bed. He came home asking his mother what she wanted to buy with his military paycheck. "He wanted it to be his career," said his best friend, Brian Pena. "It was his first job, and he was proud of it." Baez, 19, of Tampa, Fla., was killed Oct. 3 by a roadside bomb in Haqlaniyah. He graduated high school in 2004 and was assigned to Fort Bragg. "He was very caring about not just us but everybody," said Baez's mother, Jeannette Carrasco. "He was a good son, a good brother, a good friend." He had three diplomas _ infantry training, javelin course and airborne course _ framed on his dresser. He used to shut off the ceiling fan and air conditioner on Saturday mornings just to sweep his room when other teens would be sleeping. Baez hoped one day to be a psychiatrist. He was known to befriend children and chat with seniors. He would give up his television for his young niece. He also is survived by his father, Carlos.
