Corporal Zachary D.Baker, 24, of Violonia, AR passed away on Memorial Day, May 28, 2007. Corporal Baker was killed in action while conducting rescue operations in Normandy, Iraq. His vehicle was hit as his team was racing to the scene of a helicopter crash north of Baghdad. Corporal Baker joined the Army in 2004; serving with Charlie Troop, 1st Squadron, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Calvary Division during his first tour in Iraq. He was currently on his second tour with the Apache Troop, 6th Squadron, 9th Cavalry, and 1st Calvary Division. His awards include the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terror Service Medal, Army Service Medal, Overseas Service Ribbon, Combat Action Badge, and The Expert Marksmanship Badge.
Zack graduated from Vilonia High School in 2002. He was a good husband, father, son and brother who loved his family, his platoon, the Red Sox and the Arkansas Razorbacks. Zack was strong in his Christian belief and was an inspiration to others in his faith.
He is survived by his wife, Christina and son, Andrew of North Little Rock; mother and father, Kenneth, Jr. and Sandra Welcher of Vilonia; one brother, Shane Baker of Quitman; on sister, Kara Welcher of Vilonia; grandparents, Mr. And Mrs. David Jones of North Little Rock; grandfather, Kenneth Welcher, Sr. of Cabot; one great-grandmother, Berniece Jones of Jacksonville and several uncles, aunts, cousins, nephews and nieces.
Visitation will be Thursday, June 7th from 6 p.m.-8 p.m. at Griffin Leggett Rest Hills Funeral Home, 7724 Landers Road in North Little Rock, Arkansas (501) 835-3515. Funeral services will be at the same location on Friday, June 8th at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be at the Arkansas State Veterans Cemetery.
